Phone to uc500 via wifi link

scottc's picture

Hi,

I'm looking at the UC500 series as a replacement for our rather poor phone system.

Part of our network is only covered via wifi, no ethernet. Nor is it possible to run cables to these areas. Given that I have a working network, would it be possible to use a regular cisco phone (non wifi model) in those areas? ie.

Phone - Ethernet - wifi - wifi - Ethernet - UC

Obviously I'd need to power the phone, and the system wouldn't auto detect, but would this work?

Thanks in advance.

Scott

You could try this with the

You could try this with the new SPA525 phones which are desktop phones that work in with WIFI.

Since it sounds like you do not want to use those, yes, you could make this work. You would need to manually configure VLAN's on the switches and get some AP's to communicate across the WIFI span, but this is possible to do. You could still run trunks across the WIFI span and have the phones run CDP with the switches they are plugged into, so they would auto detect.

One thing I would be concerned about is QoS. I would only have a few phones at the far end site. Having too many concurrent data and voice connections over wireless isn't ideal.
Thanks
Steven

Thanks Steven, QoS shouldn't

Thanks Steven,

QoS shouldn't be an issue, as its only going to be 2 phones and 2 laptops. Both laptop users are higher level management, who don't do any work.

Funny

"Both laptop users are higher level management, who don't do any work."

Hopefully they are not monitoring you UC500.com posts ;-)
